Ancient Tunnel Systems

What could a huge ancient tunnel network be used for?
A European network of Stone Age tunnels run from Scotland to Turkey. Though they are no longer connected, the author of Secrets to the Underground Door to an Ancient World, Dr. Heinrich Kusch claims that many of the 12,000 year old tunnels have survived from the original enormous tunnel network. These tunnels have have been for protection from animals, other people, or the weather and granted a safe passage all year round.
